The new Windows XP operating system improves upon earlier Windows versions and gives home offices powerful new tools for getting work done. Many of the Windows XP Home Edition features have uses for both families and home offices. Windows XP Professional includes all the features of Windows XP Home Edition, plus several additional business-related features. Just because you're at home doesn't mean you have to work in isolation. The new version of Windows Messenger is designed to make it easier than ever to keep in touch while you work at home. It provides you with several easy methods for communicating and collaborating with your colleagues and customers. You can communicate with real-time text messages, talk over the Internet, brainstorm ideas on Windows Messenger's whiteboard, and even videoconference. Much like e-mail, Windows Messenger is likely to become an indispensable business tool. With end-to-end support and easy setup wizards for HP scanners, digital cameras, PCs and printers, Windows XP is the best operating system yet for bringing together an HP digital imaging solution. If you're in photography, Web development, graphic design, or a similar line of work, the combination of HP and Windows XP gives you a wide array of easy-to-use tools for acquiring, viewing, storing and working with digital images. You should also be aware that Windows XP could give your PC a split personality: by day it might be a hard-working business dynamo, while at night it is a video-game arcade or family entertainment center. Fast User Sharing lets you set up accounts that keep different users' files securely segregated. You could, for instance, have one account where all your business applications and files reside, and others where your family keeps their movies, music and games. Fast User Sharing keeps things straight if your PC does double-duty as both a business and family computer. System Restore is a recovery tool that's designed for those of us who are sometimes our own worst enemies. Much like the Undo function in a word processing program, System Restore allows you to return your system settings to the state they were in before you messed things up. At some point you've probably experienced a system crash caused by an incompatible or flawed device driver (the software that allows peripherals to communicate with the operating system). Windows XP automatically analyzes device drivers prior to installation and warns you if you're about to install a driver that may be incompatible with your system. And should you still wind up with a flawed driver on your PC, Device Driver Rollback lets you revert to an older, working driver if there's one installed. Also, HP works closely with Microsoft to ensure device compatibility. Over 500 HP products already have Windows XP-compatible drivers, or run on Windows XP automatically, and all future PC-related products will be Windows XP-compatible. If you wind up with a problem you can't fix, Remote Assistance allows you to let a tech-savvy friend or support professional take control of your system and look for and fix problems. For example, if you're a telecommuter, your company's system administrator could examine your system and have you up and running again without either of you leaving your desks. In addition, Windows XP now includes a built-in firewall to help shield your PC and files from the malicious mischief of Internet hackers. Windows XP Professional includes all these features, plus several extra features. Most of the added features in Windows XP Professional are designed to facilitate working within corporate environments, but they also include some noteworthy capabilities that may convince you to choose Windows XP Professional over Windows XP Home Edition as your home-office operating system. Windows XP Professional includes Remote Desktop, a feature that lets you access your computer's files and programs from virtually anywhere in the world over the Internet. Say, for example, that you have to go out of town to give a presentation to a client. There's no need to bring along your files on a laptop or disc. Just log on to your computer from one at your client's office (Remote Desktop is intended to work from any PC running Windows 95 on up) and run your presentation as if you were sitting at your desk. Other enhancements to Windows XP Professional are "under the hood". For example, Windows XP Professional is designed to offer you greater security by adding the ability to encrypt files and folders. And for serious power computing, it provides support for optimizing higher-end multiprocessor PCs.
