Windows 2000 Advanced Server is the server operating system for line-of business applications and e-commerce. Advanced Server helps ensure your systems are available by addressing the causes of both planned and unplanned network and server downtime. It also has features that let your applications grow to support large numbers of users and data. Because keeping critical applications running is essential to your business, Windows 2000 Advanced Server includes capabilities that ensure your applications can grow and remain available under heavy loads. It is the recommended server operating system for departmental servers running applications such as networking, messaging, inventory and customer service systems, databases, and e-commerce Web sites. The major functionality that Advanced Server adds to Windows 2000 Server is support for extremely high-performance servers and the ability to link servers together to handle larger loads. These capabilities provide a reliable foundation that lets you make sure your systems are available regardless of a system failure or how large an application becomes. Advanced Server lets you increase server performance and capacity by adding processors and memory. This approach to increasing your network capacity is referred to as scaling up. Another way to increase server performance is to add memory, which allows the computer to work with more information at once. Again, this is a similar situation to the performance increase you see when you add memory to your desktop computer, only the amount of memory used on a server is an order of magnitude more than that used on your desktop. Advanced Server includes enhanced memory capabilities that let you increase the memory available for server processing to as much as eight gigabytes (GB). In addition to helping ensure your systems are up, running, and responsive, Advanced Server helps your business by giving you these high-performance capabilities using popular software applications running on affordable standard PC server and storage hardware. Major system vendors including Dell, Compaq, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Unisys, and Data General offer solutions that take advantage of Cluster service. To let software use multi-processor servers, Advanced Server supports up to eight-way SMP. Improvements in the implementation of the SMP code allow for improved scaling linearity, making Advanced Server an even more powerful platform for business-critical applications, databases, and Web services. Existing Windows NT Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition servers with up to eight-way SMP can install this product. Advanced Server also supports up to eight gigabytes (GB) of memory when used with processors supporting Intel's Physical Address Extensions (PAE). Combined with support for eight-way SMP, this enhanced large memory support ensures that memory- and processor-intensive applications can be run on the operating system. The two Advanced Server clustering technologies are called Cluster service and Network Load Balancing (NLB). They can be used independently or in combination to let you avoid downtime and protect the information on your network. A server cluster is a set of independent servers (referred to as nodes) and connected storage devices that are managed together. Advanced Server supports two-node clusters. Clustered servers are physically connected by cables and programmatically connected by cluster software. The servers do not have to be the same size or have the same configuration. Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) provides the latest updates to the Windows 2000 operating systems. These updates are a collection of fixes in the following areas: security, application compatibility, operating system reliability, and setup. Windows 2000 SP4 is a recommended update that includes the updates contained in previous Windows 2000 service packs.
