All Catalyst 5000 family switches support hot swapping, which lets you install, remove, replace, and rearrange Ethernet switching modules without turning off the system power. When the system detects that a switching module has been installed or removed, it runs diagnostic and discovery routines automatically, acknowledges the presence or absence of the module, and resumes system operation with no operator intervention. Modules for the Catalyst 5000 Family models - the Catalyst 5500, 5509, 5505, 5000, and 5002 - are designed for complete interoperability and investment protection.
