Anticipating the worldwide shift to e-business, Novell has developed NetWare 5.1, a collection of services and technologies you can use to move your enterprise to the Internet. The first network operating system to integrate eDirectory, NetWare 5.1 strengthens your connections to customers, suppliers, and partners around the globe. NetWare 5.1 leverages your existing hardware and software investments to help you develop, deploy, and manage the Web applications that will establish your presence on the Internet. Tools such as IBM WebSphere Application Server 3.5 Standard Edition for NetWare 5.1 and NetWare Management Portal (NMP) simplify the once intricate processes of Web application development, deployment, and management. Using the browser-based NMP, you can manage your NetWare 5.1 servers and file system through a Web browser, from any location on your network. Some of the tasks you can perform with NMP include mounting and dismounting volumes, monitoring system resources, browsing the eDirectory tree, and automatically performing many other routine management tasks. NetWare 5.1 also includes ZENworks Starter Pack and ConsoleOne, two administrative tools you can use to deploy applications and manage your network: they can alleviate mundane management chores and save you valuable time. NetWare 5.1 supports all open Internet standards, including Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) v3, an Internet protocol you can use to access directory information from many different directories. Using LDAPv3, you will have faster access to more information than ever before. NetWare 5.1 also contains expanded support for HTTP and WebDAV. Novell assisted in the development of the WebDAV protocol and integrated it into NetWare 5.1 so you can easily serve files from Microsoft Office 2000 Web folders. Using WebDAV, you can also build Web-based administration tools for specific components of your network, such as printing.
